Set III-5-oly-001. Olympias (375-316 BC) was a daughter of king Neoptolemus I of Epirus (r. 361-360 BC), the fourth wife of the king of Macedonia, Philip II (r. 359-336 BC), and mother of Alexander the Great (r. 336-323 BC). She was also known by the names of Polyxena and Myrtale. Olympias was a devout member of the orgiastic serpent-worshiping cult of Dionysos. It was even suggested, that she may have slept with snakes, what in a legendary tradition was linked to her pregnancy and following birth of Alexander the Great.
