Possible interpretations: (1) god Vishnu Narayana (Moving on the Waters) in the aspect of Anantasayana (Sheshayana) and the cosmic serpent Shesha Ananta (Endless Remainder); (2) god Balarama as the avatara of the cosmic serpent Shesha; (3) anthropomorphic naga or nagaraja; (4) the Bodhisattva of Compassion Avalokiteshvara in the Padmapani (Lotus Holder) aspect.
