Muchalinda as the pentacephalic rearing naga hooded cobra with the long, swirling body protecting the Empty Throne (possibly the symbolic (aniconic) representation of the Buddha Shakyamuni?). The Empty Throne motif is comparable to the Christian iconographic tradition of the Hetoimasia (Preparation of the Throne or Throne of the Second Coming). |
