Figure 037 of 090 ISRAEL: LOCATIONS | SET 001 | SET 002 | SET 003 | SET 004 Figure 039 of 090
Figure WCA-isr-038. Shphiphon, rearing winged serpent with protruding bifurcated tongue and fangs, serving as a military insignia of the 35th (Paratrooper) Brigade, which consists of several units, each bearing the name of a venomous snake: 101st Paratrooper Battalion Elapidae, 202nd Paratrooper Battalion Viper, 890th Paratrooper Battalion Echis, 5135th Special Troops Battalion Flying Serpent, 5174th Anti-Tank Company Naja, 5105th Engineer Company Coluber, 5173rd Reconnaissance Company Taipan, Signal Company Eryx. This militant ophidian symbolism can be linked to the patriarch Jacob’s last words to his sons, quoted in the Bible (Old Testament), NRSV as follows: "Dan shall be a snake [נָחָשׁ, nahash ="snake/serpent" in Hebrew] by the roadside, a viper [שְׁפִיפֹן, shphiphon = "(winged?) serpent" in Hebrew] along the path, that bites the horse’s heels so that its rider falls backward." (Genesis 49: 17).
