| Figure EUR-ita-014. A scene from the founding myth of Athens and contest for the yet-unnamed city's patronage: god of the sea, earthquakes, storms, and horses Poseidon (Neptune), holding a trident and accompanied by the dolphin, disputing with helmeted goddess Athena (Minerva), with a spear and shield (aspis or hoplon?), and accompanied by the undulating oikouros ophis (sacred snake). Athena offered the local inhabitants the first domesticated olive tree and the local king and culture hero, ophiopode (serpent-legged) Cecrops accepted this gift over Poseidon's with the declaration of Athena the patron goddess of the city. |
