| Set III-2-cec-001. In Greek mythology, Cecrops was the founder and the first king of Athens. He was a culture hero, teaching the Athenians reading and writing, marriage, and worshipping of gods. Cecrops judged the contest for the city's patronage between the god of the sea Poseidon and goddess of wisdom Athena, who offered the local inhabitants the first domesticated olive tree and was declared a victor. Cecrops' three unfortunate daughters were the guardians of Athena's "surrogate" offspring, infant Erichthonius (Erechtheus).
