Figure 029 of 090 INDIA: LOCATIONS | SET 001 | SET 002 | SET 003 | SET 004 Figure 031 of 090
Figure SSA-ind-030. Story of the Buddha Shakyamuni taming the naga at Uruvilva (Uruvela, Bodh Gaya, South Bihar): The Buddha obtained the permission of one of the Kasyapa brothers to spend the night in a fire chapel and use it as a temporary shelter. The sanctuary was inhabited by a fearsome naga, which attacked the visitor with smoke and fire but was met with the reciprocal and adequate response, and being overcome crept into the Buddha's patra (alms bowl). The fire chapel is depicted with the flames breaking out from the windows in the roof and with a fire altar in front and an empty throne symbolically (aniconically) indicating the presence of the Buddha within, while behind the throne is the pentacephalic rearing naga hooded cobra. On either side of the temple are the Brahmanical ascetics standing in the general attitude of respect and veneration. The artwork was donated by the person with the ophionymic identity: banker Nagapiya of Achavada, originally from Kurara (South Uttar Pradesh).
