Scene from the Viryabala Jataka (Jataka of the Worst Evil): Ascetic sitting in front of his hut and judging the dispute of four animals: dove, crow, deer, and the rearing naga hooded cobra. The dove considered love as the most dangerous of all evils, the crow - anger, the snake - hatred, and the deer - perpetual fear. The ascetic declared: "None of you is right; the worst evil is to have a body, since the body is the source of all pain and misery". |
