Figure EUR-ita-090. Alexei Alexeev and the west view of the Basilica Papale di San Paolo fuori le Mura (Basilica of Saint Paul outside the Walls), extensively decorated with the Early Christian mosaics. It was founded by the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (r. 306-337 AD) over the burial place of Saint Paul, where, according to the legendary tradition, after the Apostle's execution, his followers erected a memorial, and was consecrated by Pope Sylvester I (p. 314-335 AD) in 324 AD. In 386 AD, the Emperor Theodosius I (r. 379-395 AD) began erecting a much larger and more beautiful basilica with a nave and four aisles with a transept. It was consecrated in 390 AD by Pope Siricius (p. 384-399 AD). The work, including the mosaics, was not completed until the pontificate of Pope Leo I (p. 440-461 AD). This sacred structure was rebuilt, extensively modified and decorated by Pope Gregory I (p. 590-604 AD) and many following generations of pontifs, including the major repairs after the catastrophic fire of 1823 AD, culminating in the reconsecration in 1855 AD, during the pontificate of Pope Pius IX (p. 1846-1878 AD), the longest-reigning elected pope in the history of the Catholic Church.
