Figure EUR-ita-089. Alexei Alexeev and the east view of the Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere (Basilica of Our Lady in Trastevere), extensively decorated with the Protorenaissance mosaics of 1296-1300 AD on the subject of the Life of the Virgin by Pietro Cavallini (1240s/50s-1330s AD), accompanying the earlier, pioneering mosaic Coronation of the Virgin (1130-1143 AD) in the apse's vault. This is one of the oldest churches of Rome, with its first sanctuary built in 220s AD by Pope Callixtus I (p. 218-222 AD) and rebuilt on a large scale in 340s AD by Pope Julius I (p. 337-352 AD). Much of the church's structure was almost completely rebuilt in 1140-1143 AD, during the pontificate of Pope Innocent II (p. 1130-1143 AD). The mosaics of the Madonna and Child on the façade are believed also to be from the 1100s AD.
