Figure 084 of 090 ITALY: LOCATIONS | SET 001 | SET 002 | SET 003 | SET 004 Figure 086 of 090
Figure EUR-ita-085. Deer about to bite the head of the red-gold-and-black serpent with a protruding tongue and yellow rhombus ornament, swirling at the bottom of the acanthus bush, from which the crucifix emerges, the motif influenced by the Late Antique Physiologus (100s-200s AD, a predecessor of the Medieval bestiaries) and especially the commentary on it by Peter Damian (1007-1072/73 AD); two confronted deers drinking from the Four Rivers of Paradise, the subject referred to in the Bible (Old Testament), NRSV as follows: "A river flows out of Eden to water the garden, and from there it divides and becomes four branches. The name of the first is Pishon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold; and the gold of that land is good; bdellium and onyx stone are there. The name of the second river is Gihon; it is the one that flows around the whole land of Cush. The name of the third river is Tigris, which flows east of Assyria. And the fourth river is the Euphrates." (Genesis 2: 10-14); "As a deer longs for flowing streams, so my soul longs for you, O God." (Psalm 42: 1); and in the Bible (New Testament), NRSV as follows: "Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb." (Revelation 22: 1).
