| Figure EUR-ita-087. Nimbate and mitred uncertain (?) bishop-saint holding his crosier with its foliated crook terminating with a bearded dragon's head and accompanied by standing Benedict of Nursia (480-540s AD) and kneeling anonymous Benedictine monk (both not shown); nearby, the Chapel of Saint Sylvester, built in 1247 AD, during the pontificate of Pope Innocent IV (p. 1243-1254 AD) and decorated with frescoes, depicting the legendary events in the life of the Roman Emperor Constantine the Great (r. 306-337 AD): his severe illness (leprosy), consultations with the pagan advisors, intended and cancelled infanticide, instructive dream, baptism and conversion by Pope Sylvester I (p. 314-335 AD, often portrayed slaying a dragon and resurrecting its victims), and the Donatio Constantini (Donation of Constantine), an apocryphal historical event, originating from the propagandistic papocesarist forgery, an instrumental part of a sophisticated diplomatic campaign, which presumably took place during the reign of the Majordomo of Neustria and future King of the Franks Pepin the Short (r. 741-768 AD, son of Charles Martel, r. 715-741 AD and father of Charlemagne, r. 768-814 AD). |
